Then I stumbled over this one:
Crushing Hyper Casual Games by Trey Smith
I soon realized these kind of games might be a bit less time consuming to create and there is even the "possibility" to be able to monetize or even have the games published by some of the bigger Game Publishers out there. So I had to make a decision. Continue some of my (over)ambitious 8-bit projects, or go Hyper Casual.
I decided to go Hyper Casual for the time being and put some of my other "love childs" on hold...
I also realized that a lot of my old "test projects" in Construct 2 could be seen as Hyper Casual Games.
I sat down an started thinking about game ideas. For some reason I ended up thinking in "circles". I was considering making a "series" of games which all had something to do with circular design. I had 2 old test projects I could have used as a start, but decided it was better to start fresh.
The first idea I sketched up in my notepad had objects like circles (background), balls and spikes (triangular ones, not cirular ones). Opened Construct 2 one evening and 3 hours later I had a game that (in principle) was playable. Not finished - by a long shot - but it was a game - and you could play it!
A few more nights, and some redesigning and tweaking later - and I had all ideas, gameplay, visuals ready. At the time of writing this piece, I still have to tie together the 3 layouts that makes up the game(end screen still to do), get the scoring system working properly (mostly done) and sort out the power-up feature in the game (just about completed).
During the design process of my first Hyper Casual Game, I decided to jump ship to Construct 3, and get rid of Windows/Construct 2 completely. It sure feels good NOT to have to start up Windows every time I want to do something in Construct. Still not happy with Construct 3 being web version only (on Mac), but it sort of works. Even when I'm more or less offline at work for weeks at a time. Just have to re-activate my "license" in the offline version running in Safari/Chrome every 7 days and I'm all good.
I suppose I should supply some visuals or even links to a playable version of the Game, but I think I'll give it a couple more nights and finish up this thing first...
Oh, and the name of the Game will be "Orbit Jumper"... In fact, I will name my entire series of circular games "Orbit-something-something"... Orbit Defender - based on an old project I used to call ZoomBalls - is also in the planning stages...
