New C64 Setup 2019

New year - new gadgets!

I suppose it all started with my daughter getting a Nintendo Switch for Christmas last year. Since I refuse to pay the annual license for the public TV broadcaster in Norway (NRK) as, firstly, I don't have a TV and, secondly, their programs are "mostly" uninteresting for me, I thought I'd go online and look for a PC Monitor to do the equivalent job. Long story short, I ended up with the beast below.

Not the best for gaming, but for my needs I found it more than suitable.

Once the new PC Monitor was up and running, I started thinking about getting some of my old gaming equipment set up as well. I bought a S-Video/AV cable for my Commodore 64 a few years back, and I really only needed a way to connect the S-Video/AV signals to HDMI - via an upscaler. I also have a Nintendo Wii which I'm sure can be connected to the monitor via the same HDMI upscaler.

I ordered the HDMI Upscaler from AliExpress a few weeks into January and within a week it had arrived from Hong Kong. A few minutes unpacking and connecting and I had the Commodore 64 up and running. I have a choice between 720p, 1080p and 4K upscaling. I think I'm running 720p at the moment, but I did test all resolutions in the beginning. They all work - both video and audio signals.

If I sit close to the TV, it's easy to see the quality loss in upscaling 320x200 to 720p (and higher) but since the monitor is so big - and I'm sitting a few meters away from the screen anyway - you can't really complain about the quality - at all.

At last, a quick video to show off the results of the technological highlight of the year - so far :)
